GROUP: Mighty Writers of Philadelphia

Posted on by · Leave a Comment

Mighty Writers is a non-profit organization whose mission is to teach Philadelphia kids (ages 7 to 17) to think and write with clarity, so their self-esteem grows and they can move toward success at school, at work and in life.

According to the Mighty Writers website, more than forty percent of  Philadelphia students drop out before high school graduation and half of the working-age adults are functionally illiterate. These are statistics that Mighty Writers is working to change.

In their storefront center at 15th & Christian, they offer a daily afterschool program, long- and short-term writing workshop classes at night and on the weekends. In addition they have programs for high schoolers, including a weekly Teen Writers Lounge, intensive SAT Preparatory courses and college essay writing classes.

Over 300 volunteers mentor some 1000 students each year.  All programs are free to participating students.
